How UC Works

Production:
Participating universities contribute video and audio recordings of lectures, seminars, panels and interviews to a virtual pool of academic content. Participants produce their own content, under their own name. The UChannel provides the audience for events that many institutions are already taping for archival purposes, but not yet airing for lack of a distribution mechanism. While production values need not be as stringent as commercial TV outlets demand, UChannel can offer professional production advice to participants who want to improve the look of their product. Contributors are responsible for their own content and for clearing the rights to distribution.

Distribution:
UChannel content is distributed through this website in various formats (not all lectures are available in all formats):

Image Download mp3 Audio (This is an mp3 audio file which can either be downloaded directly from the UChannel website, or delivered to subscribers of the UChannel Podcast)

- To subscribe to the UChannel podcast through iTunes, click here

Image Download mp4 Video (This is an m4v compressed video file which can be downloaded for personal viewing.  The video is too compressed to play well on a full-screen TV, but good enough for a small player like an iPod or PC-based viewer.  These files are delivered to subscribers of the UChannel Vodcast) In older items you might see this represented as Image.

Image Streaming Video (This is a link to a streaming video file, which requires Quicktime to view)

Image Streaming Video (This is a link to a Flash file, which requires Flash player to view.  Click here if you need to download the Flash Player)

Image Broadcast Quality mpeg2 - UC Members Only (TV stations requiring the large high-resolution mpeg2 video file for playback should contact the UChannel at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it   to register for download access.  This file is considerably larger than the m4v file that individuals may download, and designed to play out on commercial TV playback equipment)

The lectures are searchable by category, by speaker, by host institution, by keyword, or by any word or term which appears in the description of the event.

Subscription through RSS (Really Simple Syndication):

RSS feeds allow you to be notified whenever new content is added to the UChannel.  We currently offer 4 kinds of RSS feeds:

1) ImagePodcast - shows all new mp3 audio files

2) ImageVodcast - shows all new mpeg4 (mp4 or m4v) video files (these are much larger than the audio files, and run about 200 MB for a one-hour lecture)

To use RSS, you need to become familiar with the use of any of the scores of RSS readers or aggregators now available on the Internet.  (Google Reader, My Yahoo!, iTunes - just to name a few of the most popular ones).  Some of these aggregators will allow you to search for "UChannel", and then give you the option of adding that feed to your RSS Reader.  Most of them will ask you to copy the "feed URL" into a blank subscription box.

To get the "feed URL":
- click on the Image of the feed you select
- define the URL in the Address bar of your browser, and copy that to the feed aggregator
- "add" the feed
- you will then be notified of any subsequent updates to UChannel content
